What do we mean by 'salon'?

Everyone in Wisconsin knows what a saloon is, but what is a salon (without the extra "o')? And we're not talking about a hairdresser or nail place...

About 1730, Catherine de Vivonne, Marquise de Rambouilet, began regular gatherings of writers and artists for conversation "in an atmosphere of politeness and respect for others." They discussed significant issues, read each other's manuscripts and commented upon them, and discussed changes that ought to be taking place in society.

From this movement evolved the literary cafes and coffeehouses of Europe, England and later the USA. In these semi-private spaces where citizens gathered to speak to each other, new ideas were generated and profound changes in society were stimulated.

My vision for the Madison Green Salon is that it be a place of low-pressure, low preparation, discussion among persons who by their education and involvements will be stimulating to each other, and who feel the need to be in conversation with each other in the midst of their many activities and obligations. I envision someone making a presentation on a significant issue or article or book for about 20 minutes, followed by about an hour's worth of discussion.

Coffee and something to gnosh (perhaps organic muffins brought in from a bakery down the street) will be crucial, as we feed our minds and stimulate our spirits in dialogue.

To get us started, I propose a couple of articles from Orion magazine, which can be downloaded here ("The Idols of Environmentalism") and here "The Ecology of Work."

I hope you can join us!

Dave Steffenson, Upstream Institute, Salon Coordinator
